Why do women tie red ribbons around their stomach during a solar eclipse?

What is the reason behind pregnant women tying red ribbons and putting safety pins around their stomachs during the solar eclipse? This superstition started in the early nineteenth century. People believed if they tied a red ribbon and put a safety pin by their belly button it would warn off evil spirits or complications with their baby. I interviewed my sister-in-law who is 3 months pregnant. She was born and raised in Mexico and when she was around 15 years old she came to the US. When the solar eclipse was coming up, multiple people around her told her she had to wear a red ribbon and safety pins. When I first heard this I was confused, but not surprised in Mexico there are many different superstitions that people take very seriously. The day before the eclipse my sister-in-law came over to get some red ribbon that was at our house and I had an opportunity to talk to her about the tradition. I asked how she felt about the superstition. She said,”I would do anything to ensure the health of my baby even if it’s just a silly superstition. I’d rather be safe than sorry.” It let me have a deeper understanding of an important superstition in Mexico, bringing me closer to my culture.
